Hello, Red Velvet Cheesecake

18 07 2010

As of late, one of my biggest cravings has been red velvet. Usually, a cupcake is enough to sate me. But, tonight, a very helpful employee at Martha’s Country Bakery suggested an alternative: a piece of red velvet cheesecake.

Immediately beguiled by the prospect of red velvet cake with an even yummier cheese taste, I tasted it- and I wasn’t disappointed. The cake was rich, while the cheesecake had a good balance between solid texture and slightly sweet-sour taste.

In general, Martha’s Country Bakery is pretty good. Though I usually fiend for ice cream, Martha’s has convinced me to sample other treats. Chock-full of pies, butter cookies, muffins, and homemade ice cream, it’s a great pastry spot in Astoria that’s hipper than most of the old-school family bakeries in the neighborhood, and a terrific destination at all times of the day for coffee and a snack.

Small in size, equally snack-worthy.

My favorites? The cupcakes. At $2.25 apiece, it’s fairly cheap for fun sugar kicks. Apart from the classic chocolate cupcake, they also offer cappucino cupcakes, and even an Oreo delight that’ll make little (and big) kids happy.

Oreo cupcakes. Guaranteed to quell a crying child.
